DUNGOURNEY NEWS

The 1916 Jubilee Celebrations were held in Clonmult and Dungourney on Friday last.

In Clonmult the Proclamation was unveiled by Mr. William O’Mahony, Garryduff, one of the 1916 survivors, and was read in English by Sheila O’Sullivan, Kathleen Hennessy and Mary O’Leary and in Irish by Gerard Helen. A children’s Mass was then celebrated in St. Laurence’s Church by Rev. C. O’Donovan C.C. this was followed by the laying of a wreath at the Monument in memory of those who lost their lives at the Clonmult Ambush.

Celebrations also took place in Dungourney. A large crowd formed up in the village for the parade, led by the Castlelyons Pipe Band, which took place to the Old Churchyard where wreaths were laid on the graves of four of the Volunteers buried there. A plaque on St. Peter’s Hall was unveiled by Mr. Michael Hennessy Youghal. The Proclamation was read Edmond Ahern, son of Senator Liam Ahern, the flag was then hoisted by Mr. Timothy Mulcahy, Dungourney. Rev. Fr. O’Donovan C.C. then blessed the plaque and recited a decade of the rosary in Irish. The attendance included Rev. William Egan P.P., Mr. M. Corry, T.D., Senator Liam Ahern, Mr. P. J. O’Mahony, Chairman, Cobh U. D. C., Comdt. M. Leahy and members of the 4th. Batt., Cork No. 1 Brigade, Old I. R. A.

Masses During the Week:  Monday at 10.00 a.m. No Masses on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

 Mass on Friday at 7.30 p.m. (Dungourney).  Mass on Saturday at 10.00 a.m.

There will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Dungourney Church on Thursday between 8.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m.

The First Saturday Devotions continue next Saturday in Clonmult. Rosary at 9.45 a.m. followed by Mass followed by Confessions.

Centenary Prayer of Remembrance: Lord, merciful and kind, I remember the men, women and children who died during 1916 and throughout the troubled journey of our islands history. Ar dheis de go raibh a n-anamacha. Look kindly, I pray for the people of Ireland form all traditions at home or abroad. To you O God we long to sing a new song of compassion, inclusion and engagement in a spirit of true freedom. You know my frail heart and my frayed history and now another day begins. Help me to believe in beginnings and sing a new song for Ireland. Moladh go deo le dia.  Praise God forever!

It would be very appropriate to say this prayer during the coming week. Note: This s a shortened version of the centenary prayer that Fr. Seamus Madigan will say in front of the GPO on this Sunday at the State Commemorations.

Peace Concert in Knock Basilica:  Mayo International Choral Festival is hosting a Peace Concert with the RTE Concert Orchestra in the Knock Basilica on Saturday 14th May. The Peace Concert will commemorate the 1916 Rising and World War One. The RTE Concert Orchestra will be conducted by David Brophy. The orchestra will perform with a 120 member choir and soloist Anne Marie Gibbons and Owen Gilhooly. For information and tickets visit www.mayochoral.com

Note:

(1) The vigil Mass on Saturday begins with the blessing of the Paschal Fire and the lighting of candles. It’s hoped that this takes place outside the door of the Church.

(2) Easter Offerings will be taken up at all Masses next weekend.

(3) The annual collection for the Holy Places in Jerusalem will be taken up on Friday at both the celebration of the Lord’s Passion and at the Stations of the Cross.

(4) The Ministers of the Eucharist will be commissioned for another year at the Mass on Thursday night. All those involved are asked to attend.

Masses during the week: Monday to Wednesday at 9.30 a.m.

Thursday is St. Patrick’s Day, Masses on Wednesday at 8.00 p.m. and Thursday at 11.00 a.m. Mass on Friday at 9.30 a.m.

There will be no Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on next Thursday night.

Next weekend is Palm Sunday the beginning of Holy Week. Palms will be blessed at the beginning of both Masses in the Church at the 8.00 p.m. Mass and at the front of Clonmult Church for the 11.00 a.m. Mass (weather permitting). Palms will be provided.

Penitential Service in Dungourney Church on next Sunday 20th March at 8.00 p.m. Several Priests will be present so it’s a good opportunity for the Sacrament of Confession.

Emigrants Collection: The collection for Emigrants will be taken up on St. Patrick’s Day
