J. B. H. C. Dungourney v Killeagh

Sunday 9th July @ 10.00am in Dungourney.

Irish Independent, 5. 7. 1909.

Dungourney, 5-8. Blackrock, 2-8.

An important match in connection with the Cork County Championship was played at the Cork Athletic Grounds yesterday, when Blackrock and Dungourney met in the County Hurling Final. In the opening stages of the game, Blackrock did exceeding well, and scored pretty freely, but after twenty minutes of play their opponents began to draw level and just before the interval caused a sensation by obtaining a lead of a goal.

In the early portion of the second period Blackrock showed up well, but later fell away considerably, and towards the finish Dungourney scored pretty freely. The winners were better trained than their opponents, and though Blackrock had a few individually brilliant players, some of their older hands gave a disappointing display. On the contrary, Dungourney were an even, well balanced lot, trained to the hour. Over 6,000 persons passed the turnstiles.

                      Southern Star, 02. 07. 1938.

A meeting of South Cork Board of Public Assistance was held on Monday, Mr. B. Cooney, M.C.C., Chairman presiding.

Vote of Sympathy.

Mr. R. Daly, M.C.C. stated that it was with great regret that he read on Saturday of the death of Very Rev. Dr. Edwin Fitzgibbon, O.M. Cap. Deceased was a native of his own locality, Dungourney, and he recalled with what pride they followed his distinguished academic course in Rochestown as a boy, and subsequently at the Cork College and at Louvain. They felt very proud of him when he secured the distinguished position of Professor of Philosophy at the Cork College, and when he was appointed Provincial of the Capuchin Order. ‘’He had filled these exalted offices with distinction and dignity, and, despite his great responsibilities, he continued to take the liveliest interest in his native Dungourney’’.

He (Mr. Daly) had the honour of being Chairman of the Dungourney Hurling Club in their great days, and he remembered well the interest and pride Dr. Edwin took in their many victories. He proposed that the Board extend to his brother, the Capuchin Communities at Holy Trinity, Rochestown, and St. Bonaventure’s their sincere sorrow on his lamented death.

Mr. D. G. Buckley, seconding, said the late Dr. Edwin was a noted and noble priest whose advice was always valued by the people of Cork. He had left behind him a monument that would always keep his memory alive in the hearts of the Gaels – that was the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Mr. Brazier, supporting, said the people of the City and County, no less than the Capuchin Community, had suffered a grievous loss by the death of Dr. Edwin.

Other members, as well as the secretary on behalf of the staff, having joined in the expressions of sympathy, the motion was passed in silence.
