Challenge Match.

DUNGOURNEY v ST. FINBARRS.

In delightful weather those teams met on Sunday at the Cork Athletic Grounds to try conclusion for a beautifully engraved cup presented by the Committee of the Grounds, to be won outright. There was enormous attendance and the ground was in the pink of good condition. The game itself was a great disappointment, the 1905 champions making practically no stand against Dungourney. Indeed the last mentioned had matters much as they liked right through, and in the end were very easy winners, not alone on the score but also on play. In the first half they had the advantage of the wind and sun, and scored pretty freely. It was hoped when they changed ends the Barrs would be seen to better advantage, though there were very few who believed the big score run up against them could be wiped out. It was a great disappointment then to find St. Finbarr’s could not even hold their own in the second period, but allowed Dungourney to even add to their margin. The victory was an easy one, but was thoroughly deserved, and there was no doubt as to Dungourney being the better of the two teams. The Cup was subsequently presented to the winners by the Rev. D. O’Flynn, C C, St. Finbarr’s West.

At half time the score was:-

Dungourney-4 goals 7 points

St. Finbarr’s-4 points.

Towards the finish, Dungourney were doing pretty much as they liked and when the whistle went the score was:-

Dungourney- 7 goals 10 points.

St. Finbarr’s -5points.

THE MCCARTHY APPEAL FUND, DUNGOURNEY

Three weeks ago the McCarthy family of Dungourney, consisted of thirteen members, known to be decent, sober, hardworking, trustworthy, most affectionate to one another, and, as a family really excellent. The influenza struck down ten, and has killed seven. A fund, to relieve the overwhelming load of debt on the McCarthy’s, was opened in Dungourney, at a large and representative public meeting on Sunday. In addition to the expenses consequent on illnesses and burials, there will be money needed to restore the survivors to their former excellent health and give them a fresh start in life. What kind heart can picture the remnants of this once fine family sitting round the lonesome fireside and not feel for them? Seven vacant chairs! Dungourney will do its part generously, but it cannot do enough. Subscriptions are earnestly invited, and even the smallest will be thankfully acknowledged by either of the undersigned, who were unanimously chosen at the public meeting.

MICHAEL O’BRIEN R.D.C, Sandyhill, Dungourney.
