The Battle of Clonmult Centenary Calendar & Commemorative Journal
“This unique publication offers a very readable, informative and beautifully illustrated account of the Battle of Clonmult in East Cork on the 20th February 1921. Serious historians, those with a passing interest in modern Irish history and all in between will find much to whet their appetite for further reading and inquiry.
First-hand accounts by those who lived through the War of Independence years 1919-1921 are accompanied in many instances with their photographs, biographies and of the various local settings in which the drama of war played out. The reader gains insights into the gritty realities of guerilla warfare as experienced by the combatants and the civilian population of East Cork and beyond. As well as detailing the sequence of events that led to the fateful day of the battle, the calendar also references significant events in the long struggle for Irish independence over the previous decades. These serve to put the events in context without labouring the narrative.
As the current ‘decade of remembrance’ draws to a close, the analysis and commentary on the momentous events of the revolutionary period will inevitably become primarily the preserve of historians. However, mementoes such as this Centenary Calendar will, I believe, in a way that history books cannot do, keep fresh in the minds of future generations the sacrifices that were made by their forebears to win the freedoms and national identity that we value in the Ireland of today.
Great credit is due to the Clonmult Ambush Centenary Commemorative Committee without whom this publication would not exist. Their commitment to preserving the memory of those who fought and died in the Battle of Clonmult is also evidenced in the various monumental works in and around the battle site. Their dedication and efforts over a long period are a fitting tribute to the ideals that inspired the generation of Irish men and women that gave so much 100 years ago” – Denis Ring
The calendar is priced at €10* excluding postage. It can be purchased by Direct Messaging us here on the Clonmult Ambush Facebook or through email to clonmult1921@gmail.com. Calendar will also be available to purchase in local outlets.
