Clonmult Ambush Commemoration.

Clonmult Ambush Centenary Commemoration, The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins will be our Guest of Honour.

The Centenary of the Clonmult Ambush will be commemorated at the Ambush Site at Clonmult on Sunday February 20th 2022 at 1.30pm. Eircode P25T620

The organising committee are delighted to announce our guest of honour will be The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. President Higgins will also unveil a new centenary monument which is a diorama of the battle site.

This year we will be marking the Centenary Commemoration which was deferred from 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions.

On the 20th February 1921 during an action in Clonmult, seven miles north-east of Midleton, County Cork the IRA suffered its greatest loss of volunteers in conflict. Almost the entire East Cork flying column was wiped out in a single defensive action. Twelve men were shot dead and eight men were taken prisoner. Two of the prisoners were subsequently executed.

It was a deadly blow to the IRA and a battle of terrible cruelty; several of the volunteers were callously shot following their surrender and only the arrival of a British Army officer prevented the killing of the injured and remaining volunteers.

The Clonmult Ambush Commemoration Committee is drawn from the local community who have come together to commemorate this tragic event of the War of Independence. The Commemoration includes a cross laying ceremony on behalf of each of the 24 men who had been in the house on that fateful day.

We are extending an invitation to family relatives of the men involved and to all. Ample parking adjacent to the site will be available on the day. As this is an outdoor event, we recommend that you dress accordingly. As we expect a large attendance, we ask that you come early. Catering facilities will be available on site.
