Dungourney  News Letter 1967. Christy O’Sullivan.

Legion of Mary,

Dungourney,

Co. Cork.

Dear Friends Abroad,

Once again we are writing to you and hope this letter will make you think a little of the homeland you have left.

To offer ourselves to God is a simple practise and it can have a deep effect on our daily living. It brings home firmly to us that everything we do is part of our service to God, all our joys, our cares, our work, our prayers even our death.

Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick.

The Annual Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick took place on the 29th and 30th July, and 60,000 pilgrims climbed the mountain. Dungourney branch of the P.T.A.A. organised an outing and fortyone persons travelled to Croagh Patrick. The pilgrimage was led by Fr. C. O’Donovan C.C., who celebrated Mass on the summit. On the journey up they visited Ballintubber Abbey and on the return trip they visited the new Galway Cathedral and Bunratty Castle. Although the weather was inclement a very enjoyable outing was had by all.

Knock Pilgrimage.

The September Knock Pilgrimage was organised this year by the Youghal Legion of Mary and was led by Fr. Philip O’Keeffe C.C. Youghal. On arrival at Knock the train Pilgrims were joined by many others who travelled by special busses and cars from other parts of the country.

Cistercian Church.

On Wednesday 23rd July the new Cistercian Church at Our Lady of Bethlem Abbey, Portlenone, Co. Antrim, was blessed by Most Rev. Dr. Philibin, Bishop of Down and Conor. We are happy to report this item for Fr. Cornelius (Sean) O’Donovan B.E. of Ballyspillane, a former player with the Dungourney Hurling Team, is a member of the Cistercian Community at Portlenone.

Dungourney Carnival.

For the second year in succession a Parish Carnival was held in Dungourney. Large crowds attended each evening to behold the Athletic Feats and outdoor amusements and to also enjoy the concerts and dances which followed. Everybody was pleased and taken all round the Carnival was a great success.

Free Transport and Education.

Free transport is now offered to the boys and girls attending Secondary and Vocational Schools in Ireland where free education is available. This is a great boon to the school goers of this parish, for many of them had to cycle long distances in the past and few could afford the high school fees. Since the beginning of the new term in September a bus transports the children of Dungourney, Clonmult and Lisgoold to the Convent School at Carrigtwohill and to the three post-primary schools in Midleton. About fifty pupils travel each day. We hope the parents appreciate the blessing and will keep their children at school.

Clonmult School.

Early last spring a meeting of the parents of the Clonmult area was held to consider the proposed amalgamation of Clonmult and Dungourney schools. After a very thorough discussion with a representative of the Dept. of Education, the parents unanimously declined all proposals. To show their determined opposition and to indicate the united front to hold the school, the parents themselves repainted and repaired the school internally and externally. Seeing the opposition, the Dept. dropped the idea and have now appointed a third teacher to Dungourney School which was held back since Miss Russell N.T. left at Xmas. We wish to congratulate Mrs. M. Keniry N.T. Walshtown More who formerly taught at Killeagh, on securing the post. Good luck to her.

Congratulations to Master Ml. Hellen, Gurteen, and Master Edmond Colbert, Avaune on obtaining Agricultural Scholarships to Warrenstown Agric. College. To Master Gerard Hellen and John Griffin on gaining scholarships to St. Colman’s College Fermoy, and to Miss Elanor Colbert who has obtained a County Council Scholarship.

I.C.A.

During the recent carnival Dungourney I.C.A. held a very successful and enjoyable concert. Taking part were outside and local talent. In conjunction with them, Rathcormac I.C.A. gave a short sketch on the history of the parish. The entertainment was excellent and about four hundred attended.

We are sorry to report the departure of Mrs. E. O’Doherty  (Mary McCarthy, Glenbeg) from our parish to take up residence in Churchtown Mallow. We wish her many joys and happiness in her new abode. We would like to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Joe Browne, Garrylaurence, Mr. and Mrs. O’Sullivan and family Clonmult and Mr. and Mrs. Saunderson and family, all of whom have taken up residence in this parish.

Recently a centenary ceremony was held at Killeagh in commemoration of Timothy Daly, the Midleton Fenian, who was shot in the attack on Castlemartyr Police Barracks in 1867.
G.A.A.
Throughout this hurling season the local Dungourney Hurling Team, have played brilliantly.  Playing in the semi-final they played Carrigtwohill and the game ended in a draw. In the replay a month ago Dungourney emerged worthy winners by a comfortable margin. This now sees the local team in the East Cork Final for the first time since 1938.
